To Carey, boys, Dunc, Lochie, Stew, Mama and Papa Mallet,
Sending lots of love and condolences. Whilst I havent seen Neil for years, watching this service and seeing the old videos brought him back larger than life as if it was only yesterday. Neil was a great Mojo-ian and mate. I am so happy to see what a wonderful life and love he went to have in Melbourne. He supported me in my career, on the nettie court and at the bar with his love of Kris Kristoffersen - I too had a dad who played KK my whole life, so I had a singing partner. When neil laughed really hard (usually at Brice) I've never known somebody to nearly expire laughing like him, he brought everybody else along with him. He was one of the biggest hearted people I ever met. Gone but never forgotten, our Sledge. Lots of Love, Jo

Thank you for your friendship in the later years of high school. My life has been richer due to the many experiences and adventures that we shared (and I still proudly wear the physical scars as a reminder of our time together 😃😃).

My thoughts are with Carey, Jack and Harry as they now negotiate and live life without Neil, drawing on the many wonderful memories they share.

Neil, you were my big brother and everything that entails. It is hard to find the words to express just how important you have been in my life. I still can’t believe this has occurred, for so long I have pretended that this isn’t happening, both as a coping mechanism, and also, in a childish way believing that if I didn’t acknowledge it, it would cease to exist. When I have acknowledged it, I believed that your strength of character and sheer bloody mindedness would ensure you would prevail.

The whole family has always been so very very proud of you and your many achievements. It is something we rarely expressed out loud. It was something quietly known to all of us. You set the bar high on what could be achieved and we all tried to follow suit. Your success with family, friends, career and sport were a shining display of who you are. Although much too short, I think everyone would agree it was a life well lived, and take some comfort in that.

For all of your bluff and bluster, you were a big softie at heart. The first to cry at any emotional family event or life milestone. You were also the chief family hugger and those hugs were always heartfelt, sincere and given with maximum warmth. I’m going to need a Neil hug on Tuesday, but given the circumstances, may have to try my best to give them instead. Perhaps “Neil hugs” will become a family thing in the future, to make sure we don’t forget.

I have desperately tried to find a silver lining in all of this. I am so pleased you met Carey when you did and were gifted with Jack and Harry, two fine, healthy sons. A physical reflection of you, left behind for all of us. I look forward to seeing the men they become.

I am hoping your friends, tell me some funny stories about you, to allay the grief, even if only for a short time. You always enjoyed a drink and a laugh, so I don’t think you would mind. Love you big fella.

Dear Carey I am so very, very sorry for your loss. I have such fond memories of your Neil stories - of his creative spark questing for new music “finds”, his zest for his clients, and of course his lucky boots. You and your sweet boys are in my thoughts. I am sending love to you and all your community at this achingly sad time.

Sending my dearest condolences, was very sad to read this just now. Sending my love to his two gorgeous, handsome boys Jack, Harry and Carey. I worked with Neil for a short time at Marmalade and liked him very very much. Whenever I would leave the office at the end of the day at 6:00 he’d yell out “working a half day today are you?” Used to drive me mad ha!!! He had a big beautiful heart and will be so missed by you all 🥹 Tash

Scot Van Den Driesen on 29 February, 2024 at 12:24pm

Many years ago, Neil took a punt on this weird, skinny kid from WA and gave him his first job in advertising. Since then I've built a career spanning 20 years and two continents. I often think of what life would have been like had be not taken a chance on me, because it has been a pretty great ride ever since. So, thank you Neil for giving me my start. Rest in peace, and condolences to your family and loved ones.

To Carey, Jack and Harry this is such sad news. My love to you all and I send you all such love and lightness your way. Neil was a mountain of a man. I loved our chats about 70's and 80's alternative post punk music. Our love of the Smiths was always a topic of choice. Forever when I will hear the track, How Soon is Now, I shall remember you dear Neil. Love to all❤️.
