We have very fond memories of John in his earlier years, happy days when we all went Skiing in Norway and during his training time in the Sheffield Royal Infirmary. Our thoughts are with all the family at this sad time.

To Jon and Vicky, Aidan and Jess and Marj, We were saddened to hear of the passing of Dr John. We had got to know him as Vicky’s father-in-law and he was a very interesting man, of many talents, who loved his family very much. Showing it in recent months, when he made the dolls house, for his great, granddaughter Amelia. I (John) got to know of some of his life story, when I interviewed him by video, about it. I will always remember him, telling me, that he was doing his Leaving Certificate (Year 12) in Hull during the Second World War. Hull being beside the sea, the water table meant that all the Air Raid Shelters were built above ground. But the worse bit was that, when John was doing his final exams, in the middle of them there was an air raid, however the man who was supervising the exams, would not allow the students to leave and go to the air raid shelter until they had completed their exam papers. It was a privilege to know Dr John and we will have many memories of times spent with him.

I didn't know John for very long, but long enough to know that he was one of a very rare breed, a true gentleman. To Marj and all the extended family, my sincere condolences. The space he leaves in passing will ever be filled with fond and loving memories.
